September 11 Plus Seven Years

The brass
The flags amid crisp uniforms
The dignitaries
Amid the families of the dead.

Military choral and band
Music to spur patriotism
Individual benches
One for each lost soul.

Reflecting pools
Holding the water of life
Some rippled by tears.
The Pentagon remembers.

A wind swept field
Once stained with hero’s blood
A single bell tolls.
Shanksville remembers.

Ground Zero
Still a gaping hole
Sign of progress to be seen
Stunted too long by squabbling.

Politicians
On a pilgrimage
Their poisonous darts sheathed
Pause to honor the lost.

Selfless firefighters
Police and first responders
Innocents at work that day
New York remembers.
