September 11 Plus Eight Years
Afghanistan where we remain
With troops that die, cause loved ones pain
And wonder at what’s to be gained
In this misbegotten war.
The cause was pure when it began
Then politicians had a plan
To send the troops to rout Saddam
Perhaps to even an old score.
Al-Qaeda and the Taliban
Wreak death and havoc where they can
We need more troops and a new plan
If we’re not to be defeated.
The Brits and Russians, more have planned
On how to conquer that bleak land
Of mile high mountains, dirt and sand
Soon all of them retreated.
Afghan elections have been held
And rumors of vote fraud have swelled
Democracy can’t be compelled
In this ancient timeless land.
Al-Qaeda still remains a threat
Extended war balloons our debt
Bin Laden ‘s not been captured yet
The war will probably expand.
