It is the firefighter’s lot to take the risk most folks dare not
In order to protect their fellow man.
You give of your free time to train, and though sometimes it causes pain,
You gladly do the very best you can.
At times things do not go as planned, though not because you’re undermanned,
You must, at times, suffer a loss of life.
It wracks you to your very soul - protecting life is your main goal,
You strive to save each husband, child or wife.
Survivors scream and wonder why it is, no matter how you try,
You just could not manage to save their love.
You've risked your lives in smoke and flames, to search, while calling out their names
And praying for help from The Lord above.
When a run does turn out badly, causing you to wonder, sadly,
‘Was there something more I could have done?’
You have no time to be depressed, there ’s more to do, with gear you’re dressed
To face another battle to be won.
So gather firefighters all, don't hesitate, answer each call,
Go forth into the heat, the cold, the dark.
Just do the very best you can to serve and save your fellow man,
Remembering to douse the smallest spark.
