In 1983 you came,
Just born, and with a lovely name,
Through my front door, a precious little girl.
Your mom and dad were on a cloud,
The both of them so very proud,
Emotions certainly were in a whirl.
Soon you would crawl, then start to walk;
Before I knew it you could talk,
And talk you did, and did it very well.
One day I called Stella a ‘horse’,
You were indignant, and of course
I knew you were bright, really, I could tell.
I knew when we’d play tic-tac-toe,
You’d beat me! How I still don’t know,
Then we’d play ‘boxes’ so I would get even.
The boys arrived, then teen-aged years
With angst and fights with sudden tears,
But I know that you love Michael and Steven.
Too soon the high school years have flown,
And I’m so proud of how you’ve grown
Into the young woman who’s off to college.
Take your time, choose courses well;
It will be tough, not always swell,
But I know that you’re like a sponge for knowledge.
Enjoy university years
You’ll make fast friends, share laughs and tears
When some move on; others will always stay
In your life as the years progress.
I hope now that these words express
My love, Em, on your graduation day.
