Memorial Day

When asked, they served in times of war;
So many thousands died.
Some served and died in peaceful times,
Left families that cried.

They were so young, for the most part,
Had barely started life,
Though some were more experienced,
With children and a wife.

A college lad felt called to serve,
And left school in his car.
He stored it in my spare garage,
Then died in fields afar.

To all who rest in hallowed graves
At home or far away,
We pause, reflect, and offer thanks
To you this special day.

With gratitude and remembrance.
