Reminiscing

There comes a time when fathers must prove worthy of the faith and trust
Bestowed upon them by their wives; a diaper they must change.
As I remember my first time, it helps a bit to make it rhyme
While I attempt to relate here a task so very strange.

It came to pass that by-and-by, the wife did venture out to buy
Some groceries, I knew that I might have to change our tyke.
Some time had passed and sure enough, after much milk and fruity fluff
I found inside the diaper vile deposits mustard-like.

With no one there I couldn't kvetch, and though I thought I'd surely wretch,
I knew I had to change the babe or fatherhood I'd fail.
With nasal passages blocked off I managed it without a cough,
The loaded garment soon was tossed into the diaper pail.

My wife returned after a while, and with a condescending smile
She indicated that she thought I might have failed the test.
To her chagrin she sniffed about, detecting lilac with no doubt,
As all the while our baby grinned, "My daddy does it best."
