The Brave But Disillusioned

He joined this man's Army just wanting to serve,
He was fit and ready , he had lots of nerve.
He was glad to keep our land safe from attack,
But saw not a threat coming here from Iraq.

[Our Commander in Chief, for reasons unknown,
Obsessively made the Iraq war his own.
He proffered lame reasons to garner support,
Put forth several lies from a faulty report.]

He's now in Iraq with friends shedding their blood,
Hoping that the next roadside bomb is a dud.
The Iraqi soldiers don't pick up the slack
For fear an assassin will shoot them in the back.

Far from the "cake walk" as some thought it would be
It is a quagmire, if you're asking me.
"We're winning this war" is so often proclaimed,
But little is said of the cost, dead, or maimed.

So think, you at home, of the young lives now spent,
Saddam had those weapons. No? He had "intent".
That soldier intended on leave and was thrilled;
Intent is not certainty... today he was killed.
